Careers on the Decline

You’ll notice many careers above are in healthcare, computers, math, and renewable energy fields. These occupations seem to be booming. However, just because a career-field is fast-growing, doesn’t necessarily mean there are many job opportunities. For example, careers in renewable energy may be fast-growing, but the projected number of job opportunities that may open up maybe few when compared to other careers. This is one reason why it’s important to do your research. Along with researching a career’s projected growth rate, also research the projected number of careers that are estimated to be added to the workforce.

You may have noticed other industries that didn’t make the list. Though some industries are expected to grow, advances in technology and buying behavior have placed some careers on the decline. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that from 2018-2028 you can expect retail careers, manufacturing careers, and careers in the federal government to be on the decline. One contributing factor is the growth of online shopping. Another career they project to decline is office and admin support careers due to automation of tasks by using technology.

New technologies and the global marketplace can quickly alter a career’s projected growth rate. Continue to monitor all the careers you are interested in.
