Maine is best known for its famous lobsters, coastal fishing towns, rocky coastlines, and lighthouses. It also has four seasons and offers activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, camping, and rock climbing. Along with plenty to do, there are also plenty of colleges in Maine to consider.

University of Maine at Orona (UM)

First, let’s check out the University of Maine (UM) at Orono. UM is the largest university in Maine. Students are from all over the U.S. and countries around the world learn here. This university participates in the NCAA Division I sports as the Black Bears. The town of Orono has plenty of entertainment, shops, and restaurants also and students can easily escape to the nature trails at Acadia National Park or the beach.

University of Maine at Augusta (UMA)

The University of Maine in Augusta has 6,000 students enrolled. One neat program at UMA is its aviation program that even has a flight simulator. This university participates in Division II sports and go by the UMA Moose. The city of Augusta is only an hour from Portland so students have access to lots of shops, restaurants, and nature. 

University of Maine at Farmington (UMF)

The University of Maine in Farmington is a smaller university with 2,000 students. It’s also located in a small college town and the campus is within walking distance of coffee shops, stores, and restaurants. UMF is well known for small class sizes and its liberal arts college that offers teacher education, human services, and arts and science programs. They participate in Division III sports.

University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK)

The University of Maine in Fort Kent is a small college with around 1,500 students. The campus is walkable as it sits on only 54 acres and is only a few hours from Quebec City. Though UMFK is a smaller school, they still participate in USCAA sports. It’s also the host of an annual Fiddlers Jamboree, where hundreds of people gather to hear fiddlers, guitarists, banjo pickers, drummers, and accordion players from Canada and the United States.

The University of Maine at Machias (UMM)

The University of Maine at Machias has about 800 students and the campus sits on 243 acres. There is an average class size of 17 students per class providing individual attention to students. During downtime, students can take the short drive to the Atlantic Ocean and Acadia National Park. UMM is affiliated with the NCAA Division III sports.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI)

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is on 150 acres in northern Maine, surrounded by the farmland and hills. The campus itself is unique in that it offers high and low ropes courses, disc golf, and it even has a wind turbine. Hootie the Owl is their mascot and they participate in the NCAA Division III sports.

University of Southern Maine (USM Maine)

University of Southern Maine has locations in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston-Auburn. They are also part of the University Maine System of colleges and have around 7,800 students enrolled. The Portland campus is in the heart of the city but does not offer on-campus housing. The Gorham campus is about 11 miles from Portland and has on-campus housing and athletic facilities. The Lewiston-Auburn school is the newest of the three campuses and most of the university’s medical programs are located here. USM Maine participates in NCAA Division III sports and is known as the Huskies.

Maine Maritime Academy’s (MMA)

The Maine Maritime Academy’s (MMA) campus lies in the small coastal town of Castine. Castine is one of the oldest cities in New England. The Academy has roughly 10,000 students enrolled and specializes in nautical studies. They are also one of only two colleges nationwide that fields a Navel Officers Training Corps unit. Many students enrolled here go to work in the maritime or power generation industry. MMA participates in the NCAA Division III sports and is appropriately named the Mariners.
